This is a Department of Texas scholarship for Texas American Legion members who are pursuing education or training.
Eligibility
Applicant must be a member of The American Legion Department of Texas.
Membership must be paid for the year in which the application is submitted.
The applicant must provide a DD-214 or other discharge documentation showing service dates and character of discharge.
Required packet
The application requires:
Current transcript, when applicable;
evidence of acceptance or enrollment in the selected school;
typed statement explaining why the applicant should receive assistance;
information about school, community, church, and leadership activities;
recent photograph;
DD-214 or discharge documentation; and
completed application form.
Deadline and award
Application must be received by Department of Texas Headquarters by September 1 of the application year.
The official form currently states a maximum benefit of $500 for one semester, one time only.
Recipient must maintain at least a 2.5 grade-point average while completing a minimum of nine semester hours.
Previous recipients may not apply again.
This application is submitted directly to the Department of Texas. A local Post can assist the veteran with membership verification, packet review, supporting documentation, and a recommendation when appropriate.
