American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year Scholarship

This program recognizes an Eagle Scout who demonstrates exceptional achievement in Scouting, school, religious service, citizenship, and community leadership.

National awards

• Eagle Scout of the Year: $10,000

• Three national runners-up: $2,500 each

Application and routing

• The annual nomination window is November 1 through March 1.

• The completed nomination packet must reach the applicant’s American Legion Department by March 1.

• The Department selection committee evaluates the nominees and selects one Department winner.

• The Department sends its certified nomination to National Headquarters by April 1.

The Department of Texas also confirms that entries must be received at Department Headquarters by the close of business on March 1.

Typical eligibility elements

Applicants generally must:

• Have received the Eagle Scout Award;

• Be an active member of a Scout unit;

• demonstrate participation in school, church or faith community, Scouting, and community service; and

• meet an American Legion connection requirement through membership in a Post-sponsored Scout unit or through the applicant or family’s eligibility for membership in The American Legion, Sons of The American Legion, or American Legion Auxiliary.

The packet should be carefully reviewed and formally endorsed before submission. The local Post may help identify the candidate, verify the Legion connection, review the supporting documents, and provide the required recommendation.
