Steve L. Cook
Steve L. Cook Jr., a Paid-Up-For-Life Legionnaire from Bryant Oliver Post 273 in
McGregor. Having earned his eligibility through service to his country in the U.S.
Army during the Vietnam War Era and the Cold War.
He is also a member of the Sons of The American Legion, having earned his
eligibility through his father’s service as a member of the U.S. Army all Black 93rd
Infantry Division, 369th Regiment, serving during the Pacific Campaign in WWII.
This regiment was known as the “Harlem Hellfighters”. The 93 rd Infantry Division
was known as the “The Blue Helmets”
He has served in a variety of elected and appointed positions throughout his
career in the American Legion, Department of Texas, at the post, district, division,
department and national levels.
At the post level he served as Vice Commander, Finance Officer, and Chaplain.
At the district level as Finance Officer, District Commander, and District Judge
Advocate. At the division level as Division Commander. At the department level
as Department Treasurer, and Chairman of Finance and Budget committee. At
the national level he serves as Consultant to the Unconventional Forces &
Intelligence Committee for National Security.
He currently serves as Vice President of Texas American Legion Development
Foundation. And was recognized as Legionnaire of the Year in 2022.
He has dedicated his life in service to his community, state and nation. He
belongs to different organizations such as the McLennan County Veterans
Association, Community Race Relations Coalition, Cultural Arts of Waco, featured
as a Central Texas Hero, by KWTX Channel 10 for their documentary on veterans
in Central Texas and Campaign Treasurer for the WWII Hero, Doris Miller
Memorial which was completed in 2022.
Steve is married to Evelyn “Missi” Cook and collectively have six children, and
eight grandchildren.
